In particular, the prosperous city of Ephesus in Ionia (on the Aegean coast of Turkey) adopted the bee as its civic emblem.

Ephesus was the location of a famous temple of the goddess Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.) The priestesses were called melissae (honeybees).
