David's World

It's officially awards season folks! That's right, for the next few months, you are going to be bombarded with images from all the red carpets. Like that's a bad thing.

My take on red carpet dressing is not to do a who wore it best or have a worst dressed list. In many cases, it's just mean and doesn't spread positivity. Now, that doesn't mean that I don't have opinions. I have PLENTY. If I really didn't care for a look, it probably isn't in this post. However, there are probably some gowns in this post that might not be setting the world on fire, but I thought were interesting in showcasing the overall trends of the red carpet.

I've broken these looks down into trends and in no particular order. You'll also notice that some of the trends overlap (red gowns and big bows...) and I only posted them once. I figured you're smart enough to get the point without me making this post twice as long as it already is.

Without further ado... I present the TRENDS of the 2020 Golden Globe Awards!

It's the end of another year, well, decade so we decided that it would be a fun idea to round up our top 10 pop culture moments of 2019. This year has been filled with great music, movies & television. It would be impossible to cover all of the greatness, so here are the David Peck staff member picks:

I have compiled a list of my favorite local businesses (besides yours truly!) that everyone should check out around this time of year. I know the "shop small" trend is drilled into every ones head right after the Thanksgiving, but I think reiterating the importance of keeping Houston businesses around is something that should be remembered year-round.

Black Tie Halloween can be super fun and the possibilities are endless. The main thing to remember is that it should be fun and perhaps err on the classier side of things. This is not the time to dress in one of those costume-in-a-bag-sexy-pirate-costumes. You want to think of interesting characters or smart subjects. It's not the occasion to use Halloween as an excuse to leave the house wearing less than you normally wear to the pool... I digress.

To help you get prepared, we've put together a few simple ideas that can be put together rather easily with a few outfits that we had around the boutique. It doesn't have to be super complicated and you can still look classy and sassy for your next Halloween bash.

If you thought this post was going to be about basketball, you might be disappointed, but not for too long because what I have for you is better than March Madness. (That is a basketball thing, right?)

We have been hard at work this year working on ways to deepen our relationships with organizations we love. Last week, I introduced our partnership with Susan G. Komen, and this week it's all about Houston Grand Opera (HGO). I've been involved with the opera is some form for over 8 years. The past couple of years we've had the pleasure of dressing many of the chairs of the Concert of Arias and the Opera Ball

Cancer sucks.

There's really no way to get around that. Whether you survive your diagnosis or not, cancer makes a mess of your life. It challenges everything you know about yourself. Cancer doesn't just stop at you. Its impact on your friends and family can last a lifetime.

Unfortunately, cancer seems to touch everyone at some point. I've lost count of how many clients we've had who have been diagnosed. In my own family, cancer has taken the lives of my grandmother and my mother-in-law in addition to the many other non-terminal diagnoses. Cancer doesn't seem to care if you've been healthy your whole life or not, have the insurance to cover treatment or not, have a support system to get you through it all. Like I said, it sucks.

Natalie's Made to Marry post should really be about her whole family and friends that we have dressed either because of recommendations or because her family's world is just that cool that their friends are our clients and vice versa! It's been a blast getting to know Natalie and her mom Laura over this past year.  We've also dressed Laura for Natalie's brother's wedding since this wedding!

Being able to work with a client in order to fulfill their vision for such a special event is one of my favorite parts of my job. Natalie was very clear about what she wanted and that she was not up for a big Cinderella dress. She wanted something simple, clean, and dramatic and I was totally up for it. Her dress actually a bodysuit with two different skirts and a removable cape. I love this look because it was Natalie truly being herself and the result was stunning.

Part 1 of my Paris Travel Guide has been a smashing success. It's already one of my most read blog posts... EVER!

Part 2 is for fashion lovers, but don't worry, even if fashion is not your passion (I cringe every time someone uses fashion and passion in the same sentence) some of these stops are just worth it. I've got shopping destinations, museums, and just plain cool places that you're not going to want to miss. Many of my museum choices are on Vogue's list of most beautiful fashion museums in Paris. What can I say? Great minds.

I get asked all the time where my favorite places to go to are or what to do in Paris. I could spend days talking about Paris and all the wonderful things there are to do.  It was about time that I collected all my favorites in one place as an easy reference for those of you who are traveling. This guide is broken down into areas (arrondissements) I would enjoy during my time in Paris. Some things are fancy, some are not, but they are all things I love and make Paris feel like home whenever I am there.

This was originally intended as one post, but for your mental health and to keep your scrolling thumb from exhaustion, I've made it into 3 parts. Part 2 will be fashion related and Part 3 will be about easy day trips.

Since you guys seemed to really like my first Podcast Roundup, I thought it was time for an update. I've spent a lot of time traveling this summer, so having a list of podcast recommendations on hand is perfect for road trips and airport waiting areas.

I'd love to know what you think of this list and I'd also love to know what you're listening to as well!

There are some brides that are just infinitely cooler than I am. Amy West has this chill, Stevie Nicks, rocker vibe, and needed a dress to match. Not an easy task to find off the rack. Amy's rocker chic lace wedding gown fit her like a glove and she ended the night in a webby lace jumpsuit with a white satin, floor-length coat. Match made in rock star heaven.

You can find out more about Amy's spectacular wedding at the Smart Financial Center in the latest issue of Weddings in Houston Magazine

It's not every day that I'm able to design a wedding gown for someone as adventurous and spontaneous as Ashley. When I say that this gown was 4 years in the making, I'm not kidding. Ashley came to me as soon as she got engaged and knew exactly what she wanted. She knew that they weren't in a rush to get married, but when they decided to set a date (November 21st, 2018 at the Fairmont San Francisco Penthouse Suite), she was prepared. We started making the dress four years after my initial sketch and we barely changed a detail!
