David's World

One thing I have learned over the years is that material things do not make you happy long term, but they do add a sense of temporary happiness in a moment. What if I told you that a collection of material things used in a beautifully functional setting could help paint the most perfect picture for new memories to be made. Helping you to create and curate a lifestyle that you love to live is why we do what we do.
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love theatre and anyone who knows me knows how much I love TUTS (Theatre Under the Stars). It is Houston's home for musical theatre after all. I've loved serving on the Advisory Board and our company has been proud to support the education and programing at TUTS over the years.
Today's guest is one of the main reasons that TUTS has been so successful recently (you'll meet the other reason next week) and I couldn't be more thrilled to have Hillary Hart Inside the Design Studio today. Hillary is one of those rare minds that so fully understands the complexity of both the arts and business. I often walk away from board meeting feeling like I've learned something tangible that I can apply to my own business because of her insight and knowledge. She has a true gift for leadership and I've been thrilled to see how she has shepherded TUTS into another era.
If you've never had the pleasure of having something made, you are missing out! It's funny, because many women come into the process being super nervous about the process because they can't see what it is they're getting, but at the end, almost every single person who goes through the process with us wonders why they have never done it before and and say it's the only way to go.
I realized that for as much custom work as we do, I have never dedicated a full blog post to exactly what it is and what you can expect. So, here you go, a quick guide to what getting something custom made is like!

If you are familiar at all with Houston Grand Opera, you probably know Scott Ipsen. I was fortunate enough to meet Scott when he was in charge of all the events at the Opera, and now he's Director of Patron Services, which basically means he's responsible for making loads of people happy.

Scott and his wife Larissa (who also happens to be one of our best clients, she wears our clothes so well!) make going to the opera a true joy. I'm so thankful to have them both in my life and call them friends. I can't wait for the day when we can all hang out again in person.

I know you'll enjoy getting to know Scott or even getting to know him a little better! And I can honestly say that his answers to my questions are so different than we're used to getting!

I always look forward to red carpet season, but it's become even more fun in recent years since we've focused so much on our custom clothing side of the business. Seeing stars on the red carpet can help inspire our clients to try something a little outside of the box or see a "trend" on a woman who is not just a model on a runway.

This year, our friend COVID-19 threatened to wreck havoc on awards season, but creative people being the creative people that they are, found ways to make this year's Emmy Awards both fun and Fashionable. The results were unexpected and showcased how fun fashion can and should be. I haven't been to a public event or restaurant since February, so seeing a sense of normalcy was good for my spirit.

Can I tell you how much I love working with Melissa Sugulas? I probably can't because it's that much fun. As to when I met Melissa, I can't really place that either. She's one of those people that seems to have been in my life since coming to Houston and she's been a friend and client forever.

She's a terrific personal stylist to boot. Melissa gets what is the right or wrong thing to wear to all of the myriad events that we have in Houston (this assumes that there's no COVID situation happening). I've loved working with her clients over the years, creating staples that work in their wardrobe.

In another, pre-pandemic world, my time right now would be filled with the beginning bustle of the fall social season. We would be finalizing our plans to support local philanthropic events, and most likely dressing many of the chairs of Houston's Gala Scene.

Social season usually also means that I emerging from my version of hibernating/hiding from the dead of the summer heat and I get to see friends again. Amber Elliott is one of those people that I look forward to seeing in Houston's effort to squeeze as many social events into an evening as possible...

Am I the only one who is feeling lost on what to do this weekend? Well, we put our heads together and found a couple of fun ideas to pass the time. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy your labor-free, labor day!

Today's Made to Marry post is a little different in that while we didn't design the wedding gown, through the process of doing the wedding gown alterations and multiple looks for Lauren O'Malley's mom, Kalli, and grandmother, I feel like I made friends for life.

I also got an inside look at a SPECATULAR new wedding venue, Weddings at Windy Knoll.

I couldn't be more thrilled to have my guest today Inside the Design Studio. An award-winning investigative journalist, producer, and author, Alison Flowers is one of those women you don't forget, and while we don't live in the same city or even state (she's based in Chicago), I'm so proud to call her a friend and that

I've been wanting to feature today's guest for EVER and I'm so glad that we were able to sit down with her for today's edition of Inside the Design Studio. Crystal helped orchestrate one of the most magical gowns that we've ever done (here's a whole post about it) and I still dream of having another moment like that (cue Kelly Clarkson).
It’s currently 100 degrees in Houston and I have officially boycotted bras. I have become used to the “sweaty look” – although I always use the makeup industry term “Dewy” because I find this word makes me sound glamourous – and I literally can’t fathom wearing pants. I know you can all relate. The problem is, I’m constantly playing internal tug of war with myself because I CARE. I want to look cute; I really do. It’s just that mother earth has a different plan for me, or does she?
