David's World

Books are important. They shape us and mold us in ways that we don't quite realize. It can be a book that opens our minds to see the world in a new way, inspire us to take on adventures we would have never dreamed, make us a more empathetic and caring member of the world.

I don't know if I would have ever moved to Paris if it weren't for books.

These are all very real and timely questions. I've had years to think about all of these. Well, all except the masks. That's a new one.

Lucky for you, I was able to sit down (virtually, because #socialdistancing) with my friend Laura Max Rose on her podcast, Look Ma', No Hands. If you don't listen already, Laura's name might be familiar from our recent Inside the Design Studio Profile on her. We discuss all these things and then some.

The last week has definitely turned our world upside down. We went from making gala gowns and wedding dresses to mask makers in an instant.

I knew we had to at least try to do something that could make a difference. After loads of research (AKA Google) and many conflicting reports, we came up with this design. It's made from non-woven polypropylene fabric. This fabric should have better protection than just plain cotton, and even though it's not hospital grade, it's the closest thing we could find that's readily available and can be used for mass production.

As I sat in my design studio, thinking of how to give value to those around me, I realized spreading our staff's favorite children's books would be the perfect way to help struggling parents gain ideas on how to find some semblance of normalcy.
As you all know, this week has focused on this crazy global crisis. Firstly, I hope that everyone's health, mentally or physically, is doing well after everything that has transpired with CoronaVirus. Secondly, I think it's extremely important during this time that we come together and support our community and those around us. Our local economy is definitely going to take a hit due to these events and I wanted to highlight a few ways that we can all come together to support small businesses.
Each wedding we get to do is so unique and special, mostly because we get to meet wonderful brides and their families. For Caroline Looke Benak's wedding, we met a whole lot more. We did a total of 10 custom bridesmaid dresses in luscious emerald green velvet along with the flower girl and 2 ring bearer jackets!

It's been about 4 1/2 years since we did our last candle. I loved them and so did our customers, but for some reason, I just hadn't gotten around to releasing another one. That all changed last fall when we started working with Houston Grand Opera. It was a great opportunity to create a brand new, custom scent just for them.

Binging shows on Netflix until 3am can't just be our guilty pleasure? Our staff has rounded up each of our all time favorite television series. If you're looking for Netflix recommendations and beyond this list will fulfill your needs.

It's very hard to pick a favorite bride because all of them are so unique, but I would be lying if I didn't say that that making my close friends' (and colleagues') were extra special.

Many of you have had the pleasure of working with Kate (Katya) on your own special occasion. She is our patternmaker extraordinaire and manages our production.

Making our beloved Kate's wedding dress was something I had been excited to make since the day I heard about Samuel. Not only do I work with Kate, but she has become a very close friend of mine over the past six years. Her custom wedding gown had to be perfect and exactly what she had in mind. We collaborated as a team to bring her wedding dreams to reality.

It's hard to believe but the 2020 Oscars have come, but they're not gone until we have a chance to recap the fashion for the evening.  I asked yesterday in my Instagram stories if you wanted to see my favorites or if you wanted to see trends. Overwhelmingly, you wanted to see my faves, but there were enough of you that were interested in trends that made me want to touch on some of them. I've loosely gathered together trends and highlighted my favorites within each trend with a few miscellaneous thoughts at the end.

One of the best parts of what we do is that we get to know our clients. We truly have the best relationships with you and I thought it would be fun this year to let you get to know us a little better.

We've rounded up our top picks on a range of different topics and want to start out with 5 movies that we just can't quit. These picks showcase the array of personalities and tastes we have here in the studio. We're not claiming that these are all high-brow selections or would win all the awards, but they are the movies that have stayed with us over the years.

I can't exactly remember the first time I met Laura Max Rose, but somehow I can't imagine life in Houston without her.  I've known her mother, Leisa Holland-Nelson, for almost as long as I've been in Houston, so it makes sense that Laura would make it onto my list of favorite people. She's got an inquisitive mind, a talent for interviewing (hence her latest project), and a genuinely compassionate and empathetic world view that is inspiring.
